Work experience with Carole Waller

Jess Thomas

Carole gave me an overview of tasks performed at placement with some feedback from my experiences working with her and her husband in her studio at home and in her shop in the city centre:

“Assisting in the textile studio, steaming, washing, ironing and sorting fabrics for up-cycling projects. Screen printing bags for my gallery and then making greetings cards with silk off-cuts. Jess was very helpful and competent at everything thrown at her and hopefully learned something about Procion P dyes as well as the diversity of self-employment”

The placement was hugely focused on print which was still hugely valuable to my practise. Through observing her at work I was able to produce a series of my own samples towards the end of the week that reflected my own style.

The most valuable thing to take from the experience was dying and printing my own samples. This meant that I had freedom to design what I wanted from her library of screens. And eventually make a collection of make-up bags from that reflected my time working alongside Carole.
